Description
"The Tuscan archipelago is an earthly paradise of which Gorgona is the wildest and most luminescent pearl of Aphrodite. Behind its apparent surliness, the unspeakable seduction of perfumes and silences, and a nature that moves for its strength, for the its eternal puberty.... And around, water and salt, to reflect the messages of the sky, to tighten the laces to the sails." (A.Bocelli - 2014)
The Gorgona project was born in August 2012 thanks to the collaboration between Frescobaldi and Gorgona, the only penitentiary island in Europe.
Here the inmates spend the last period of their sentence, working in contact with nature to develop professional skills that facilitate reintegration into the working and social reality. The project begins around a small vineyard, in the heart of an amphitheater overlooking the sea, the aim of which is to allow prisoners to gain concrete and active experience in the field of viticulture, with the collaboration and supervision of agronomists and Frescobaldi winemakers.
Gorgona Rosso sees the light with the 2015 harvest, from some rows of Sangiovese and Vermentino Nero, grown organically and then refined in terracotta jars. Today the vineyard extends over two hectares, of which one initial and a second planted in 2015. From this vineyard of Vermentino and Ansonica Gorgona was born, the result of the uniqueness of the place, of the work of man and symbol of hope and freedom. The Gorgona label aims to be the "extraordinary edition" of the island, telling a different aspect of it every year.
Approaching Gorgona means discovering unique biodiversity, thick Mediterranean scrub, the pristine sea, but also fortifications, witnesses of ancient civilizations and a small church built at the beginning of the 18th century by the Carthusians, dedicated to San Gorgonio. The Gorgona 2020 label tells us about the fortress and the towers on the island. On the western coast, steep and jagged, stands the mighty "Torre Vecchia", an imposing Pisan manor or better defined as "a fortress", covered in local stone, now ruined, built between the 11th and 13th centuries which had the purpose of to guard the stretch of sea towards Corsica and to defend the monks from frequent pirate incursions.
On the opposite side of the island, towards the continent, the Cala dello Scalo, the fishing port dominated by the "Torre Nuova", a 17th century Medici fortification which completed the marine defense system. Finally, on the island there are also two reddish towers erected at the end of the 19th century to monitor movements on land: at the edge of the pine forest, near the vineyards, the Clock Tower, whose name is inspired by the sundial placed on the side of the construction and, towards Cala Scirocco, the Garibaldi Tower.
Organoleptic notes: Gorgona 2022 expresses a great Mediterranean feel, with all the warmth of the sun that kisses the island and the freshness of the sea breezes that constantly blow. Its is a straw yellow color full of golden reflections. The bouquet is an elegant combination of Mediterranean, floral and fruity notes. The hints of Mediterranean scrub reminiscent of cistus, helichrysum, mastic and juniper combine with broom and hints of hawthorn. Among the fruity notes, the hints of exotic fruits are evident, such as abacaxi and maracuja but even the citrusy ones with bergamot. On the palate, the flavor and freshness that intertwine in a magical balance are wonderful, even more accentuated by the initial softness and extreme elegance that accompanies throughout the tasting. Like all vintages, 2020 also manifests itself as a further sensational chapter in the history of Gorgona. Gorgona brings those who taste it to breathe and savor the stories that only this little big island can tell.
