Around a small vineyard, in the heart of an amphitheater overlooking the sea, the project begins with the goal of allowing inmates to have a concrete and active experience in the field of viticulture, with the collaboration and supervision of Frescobaldi agronomists and oenologists.

Gorgona Rosso was born with the 2015 harvest, from some rows of Sangiovese and Vermentino Nero, cultivated organically and then aged in terracotta Orcio. Today the vineyard covers an area of two hectares, of which one is the original and a second planted in 2015. From this vineyard of Vermentino and Ansonica comes Gorgona, the fruit of the uniqueness of the place, the work of man, and a symbol of hope and freedom. The Gorgona label aims to be the "extraordinary edition" of the island, telling a different aspect each year.

Approaching Gorgona means discovering unique biodiversity, a dense Mediterranean scrub, the unspoiled sea, but also fortifications, witnesses of ancient civilizations, and a small church built at the beginning of the 18th century by the Carthusians, dedicated to San Gorgonio. The Gorgona 2020 label tells us about the fortress and the towers present on the Island. On the western coast, steep and jagged, stands the mighty "Torre Vecchia", an imposing Pisan manor or better defined as "a fortress", covered with local stone, now in ruins, built between the 11th and 13th centuries with the purpose of guarding the stretch of sea towards Corsica and defending the monks from frequent pirate raids.

On the opposite side of the island, towards the mainland, is the cala dello scalo, the fishermen's harbor dominated by the "Torre Nuova", a Medici fortification from the 17th century that completed the marine defense system. Finally, on the island there are also two reddish towers built at the end of the 19th century to monitor movements on the mainland: at the edge of the pine forest, near the vineyards, the Clock Tower, whose name is inspired by the sundial placed on the side of the building, and, towards Cala Scirocco, the Garibaldi Tower.

Climatic trend

The season on the island of Gorgona was characterized by a winter with frequent rains, but with temperatures never harsh, as they were constantly mitigated by sea breezes. The vine began its vegetative cycle with the usual early start that distinguishes the island, budding in the first week of March. A particularly pleasant spring, with mild and sunny days, favored the vegetative-productive development of the plants, leading them towards a summer that proved slightly cooler than previous years. Temperatures rose from the end of July; however, the island's microclimate, made unique by the presence of the sea, combined with isolated rain showers, allowed the clusters to reach the harvest period in perfect physiological and sanitary condition. An equally sunny but always windy September finally ensured that the grapes developed good polyphenolic maturity, accompanied by an intense and elegant aromatic profile.

Organoleptic notes: Gorgona expresses a great Mediterranean character, with all the warmth of the sun that kisses the island and the freshness of the sea breezes that constantly blow. Its color is a straw yellow full of golden reflections. The bouquet is an elegant combination of Mediterranean, floral, and fruity notes. The scents of Mediterranean scrub recalling rockrose, helichrysum, mastic, and juniper combine with broom and the memory of hawthorn. Among the fruity notes, the scents of exotic fruits such as pineapple and passion fruit are evident, as well as the citrus notes of bergamot. On the palate, wonderful sapidity and freshness intertwine in a magical balance, further enhanced by the initial softness and an extreme elegance that accompanies throughout the tasting. Like all vintages, 2020 also manifests as another amazing chapter in the story of Gorgona. Gorgona takes those who taste it to breathe and savor the stories that only this small great island can tell.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0580/0787/9853/files/Gorgona_Bianco_-_2024_-_Frescobaldi.jpg?v=1760082352
