Tasting Notes: The wine is born from a skillfully balanced blend of fine varieties: 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. With an alcohol content of 14.5% vol., Ornellaia 2020 opens with seductive aromas of ripe red fruits, accompanied by subtle notes of vanilla and sweet tobacco. The Climate of the Year: The year offered varied climatic conditions, but the capabilities of the Ornellaia estate turned challenges into opportunities. After a mild and rainy winter, March saw a temporary drop in temperatures, but the still-protected buds avoided frost damage. Spring was generally warm with normal rainfall, ensuring regular vegetative development until flowering occurred between May 20 and 25. June brought prolonged drought and scorching temperatures, but the vineyard responded well, ensuring uniform veraison. At the end of August, refreshing rains facilitated grape ripening, allowing for an optimal harvest.
Vinification and Aging:
The harvest was carried out by hand with careful selection of the grape clusters, both before and after destemming. Each variety and plot was vinified separately. Alcoholic fermentation was conducted in stainless steel tanks and cement vats at controlled temperatures. Maceration lasted about 15 days, ensuring optimal extraction of aromas and tannins. Malolactic fermentation took place mainly in oak barriques, where the wine aged for about 18 months. After blending, it was returned to the barriques for an additional 6 months before resting in the bottle for 12 months, for a total of 36 months of aging.
