Description

Opening a bottle is equivalent to unleashing a liquid kaleidoscope. A rare combination of sumptuous opulence and refined elegance.

In homage to its vigor, its softness and the enormous debt to the soil from which it originates, Masseto owes its name to the hard blocks of blue clay, called 'boulders', which form on the surface of the vineyard.

Masseto's production is a game of balance: you feel like a tightrope walker always on the edge of a precipice.

Wine production in Masseto is both an adventure and a continuous discovery. A place where intuition prevailed, where no one could be certain of the success of the fragile Merlot, even if the presence of the blue clays of the Pliocene suggested the possibility of success. Masseto's production is a game of balance: you feel like a tightrope walker always on the edge of a precipice. Clayey soils in fact present some contradictions: An ability to store large quantities of water and release it very gradually. Soil that is cold and wet in rainy years but becomes rock hard in hot summers, creating a physical barrier for roots as they struggle to reach deep underground. A soil in which, with a low planting density, a level of vigor is achieved that would normally be expected from a high density vineyard. Masseto vines seem to constantly struggle with the elements, often on the verge of collapse but somehow always able to resist and produce fruit of incredible concentration and flavour. A rare combination of vigorous maturation and sumptuous concentration that somehow manages to preserve complexity and freshness. Every single vintage expresses the unmistakable character of Masseto, but with a slightly different interpretation - just as a musical masterpiece sounds differently depending on the artist who interprets it.
