Wine Spectator

Wine Spectator

Wine Spectator editors review more than 15,000 wines each year in blind tastings. Each issue of Wine Spectator magazine contains 400 to 1,000 wine reviews with detailed tasting notes and drink recommendations. We set rigorous standards for ourselves and rely on the proven ability and experience of our editors as tasters and critics. Below are the guidelines we follow to maintain the integrity of our tastings.

There is a reason the statues of justice portray a woman wearing a blindfold.

Impartiality is fundamental to fairness; good judges base theirs
decisions on facts, not favoritism.
At Wine Spectator, this simple truth underlies our wine ratings. We believe that evaluating wines blindly guarantees
that our tasters remain impartial and that our reviews are impartial, with all wines presented on an equal footing.
You might be surprised to learn that not all wine writers share this approach. Some critics review wines not blindly, and even alongside the winemakers and at the cellars. They argue that honesty and independence can exceed expectations that inevitably arise from knowing a wine's identity, reputation and price. We respectfully disagree.
